Annotations for Emily Rough Mix

Lyric: It was the worst part
Annotation:
The speaker may not have known how much trouble their actions would cause Emily. They may have done what they did because they had to, or because they thought it would be better for the both of them, and the “worst part” is that they didn’t understand how badly their actions would impact her. It may be a case of “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

Lyric: Oh, please, just hide me now
 I won’t tell a soul
Annotation:
“Oh please just hide me now, I won’t tell a soul” could refer to the speaker having been pressured into a horrible act, or having witnessed it. In the case of Emily being their victim, it’s likely that the speaker held some closeness to Emily, and was either pressured into hurting her, forced to do something she couldn’t forgive him for, or stood idly by while other people hurt her.

Lyric: Oh, please, don’t leave me now
 Baby, please, don’t go away
Annotation:
emily possibly could have been a song from the unreleased album, the paper kingdom. the paper kingdom was a concept album about a support group for parents who had lost their children. they believed their children had gone into a forest in order to fight a witch. emily possibly could have been one of the children? based off of the lyrics, (it was the worst thing that i’d ever done / it was a headshot, you know you gave me the gun) emily might have been shot. this song seems to be from the parent’s perspective, and based off the narrative, emily may have been shot by one of the parents who now feels immense guilt over the incident. now, that the parent is in this support group, they are waiting for emily to “come home” from the fight. this would also explain the “come home” repeated throughout the bridge.

Lyric: Sometimes, you do things
You need to do to survive
Annotation:
It sounds like it was a murder for hire, the narrator didn’t want to kill her but he needed the money to survive and there was no other option.

Lyric: It was the last time
 I saw her alive
Annotation:
This line makes it sound like the narrator is talking to a detective about Emily’s disappearance, possibly giving an alibi and pretending to have nothing to do with her disappearance.

Lyric: Oh, please, don’t leave me now
 I’ll miss you so much
 Oh, please, don’t go away
 I’m needing your touch

 [Pre-Chorus]
But please don’t leave me now
 Baby, please don’t go away
Annotation:
This song may be about Gerard’s late grandmother Elena, who inspired him to pursue music. She was also the subject of their 2004 hit “Helena,” and is briefly mentioned in “Welcome To The Black Parade.” Of course, “I’ll miss you so much, oh please, don’t go away” are simply expressions of how much Gee misses her, while “you’re far from home” is reminiscent of the “Helena” lyric “we are so far from you.”

Lyric: ”I’d like to hear that, see if the tempo is good, ya know?
Yeah, I wanna listen to it.”
Annotation:
Gerard is most likely speaking about the song that just played after doing the rough demo. He’s looking forward to having it being played. There’s potential for “Emily” to be added on the upcoming album back in 2006. It doesn’t, perhaps because it doesn’t fit the overall theme of The Black Paradeor the message. The bassist, Mikey Way explained what My Chemical Romance was really about in an issue of AP Magazine.“There were endless catchphrases to classify us, but we always stood firm that we were making rock n’ roll music as a rock in’ roll band.” “Emily” may not have been a representation of the band for the time, so the artist stayed true to themselves and gave their album an honest light but allowed “Emily” to age in their metaphorical band closet. We do get to listen to eventually, ten years after the release of The Black Parade. Dusty but still a wonderful piece.

Lyric: And, Emily, we’ll figure
If I could figure it out
 We’ll both now be free
 Emily, come home
Annotation:
The writer has done something terrible to Emily, so bad to the point that she has run away or excluded herself from the writer’s life. He feels immense regret that he did something to the point where she had to leave him behind. He is attempting to send out his words that he is striving to find a solution; to understand the mess he has assembled. When he does find the solution, they will no longer have to live in fear of upcoming catastrophes, of possible obstacles, of each other. This can only be achieved if Emily returns, therefore the writer pleads in hope of a better tomorrow.

Lyric: Emily, you’re far from home
Annotation:
He killed her, so she’s not on earth anymore. Judging by the rest of the album, The Patient probably assumes she’s in either Heaven or Hell. Either way, she’s far away form him

Lyric: It was the worst thing
 That I’d ever done
 It was a headshot
You know, you gave me the gun
Annotation:
He made a mistake, but she was the one who set him up for failure, so he shouldn’t have to take all the blame. This section is reminiscent of the band’s 2004 track “I Never Told You What I Do For A Living. And never again, and never again They gave us two shots to the back of the head And we’re all dead now

Lyric: You did to this little girl
Annotation:
They’re contemplating what they did to ‘this girl’ – they most likely killed her, referencing the first three lines; “It was the worst thing that I’d ever done, It was a head shot” They are reflecting on the trauma they dealt, and the inability as regards coping with what they did.
